Hall Pass for Christians

Have you seen the movie Hall Pass? It’s about two husbands who were granted a week off from marriage by their wives to do whatever they wanted without consequence. Their wives were banking on their husbands’ experience being so far less exciting than they’d anticipated, that the guys would come running home with a newfound appreciation for their wives, families, and lives.

Have you ever felt you wanted a ‘hall pass’ from Christianity? A time off to do whatever you’d like, without having to answer to God for your attitude, words, or behaviors. Wouldn’t it be so much fun to feel ‘free’ from the watchful eye of God, so your every action wasn’t being monitored or judged?

At first, this may sound appealing; at least temporarily. Upon further consideration, though, the thought is frightening and unsettling. God places expectations on our lives for our benefit; to keep us happy, whole, and safe. The blood of Jesus Christ spared us from a life where our human selves could not possibly meet the requirements of keeping the law.

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood —to be received by faith…” (Romans 3:23-25)

God doesn’t want us to feel strangled by rules or to live an empty existence void of happiness and joy. Quite the contrary. He has provided the freedom to enjoy life; the opportunity to grow and prosper. We’ve been equipped with gifts and talents, tools for meaningful relationships, and his word to guide and direct our path. We have the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Is anything really worth a ‘pass’ from the amazing blessings God has provided? Why would you want one?

Just as in the movie, where the men found out there is nothing greener on the other side, Christians can rest assured that God has given us the best there is. We need not look any further than the amazing life and opportunity we already have.

Hall Pass, Schmall Pass. No Thanks! We’re good!
