No Flash in the Pan Here!

  • SumoMe

Have you ever heard a pitch that just pumps you up? It rocks your world and you KNOW you will NEVER, EVER be the same again. Life changing, earth shattering, heart thumping conviction.

And then you put the book down, walk away from the speaker, turn the CD off and guess what? Life resumes. You go back to your ho-hum existence…unfulfilling job…negative friends…unhealthy behaviors…lazy ways… and you don’t even skip a beat. Blaaaahhhhhh…..

200434789-001WHAT IS WRONG WITH US? Why do we swing from one end of the pendulum to the other so very quickly?

A ‘Flash in the Pan’ is described as something that happens only once or for a short time and will not be repeated. Is that what you want for something which truly inspires you? Of course not!

Once in a great while, though, action actually follows the inspiration. What happens in that instant when the exception occurs? When you FINALLY step over the line of change and it sticks…permanently. What makes THAT particular moment in time different than all the others when change seemed imminent but then poof – the drive and determination completely disappeared?

Alcoholics Anonymous has their take on this. They say, “Change occurs when the pain of remaining the same is greater than the pain of changing.Painful situations can force change that you may have otherwise been inclined to resist and ignore.

Support4Change.com suggests that sometimes people are pushed to change. Perhaps a spouse, friend or boss is extraordinarily influential and may coerce you into change.

Unfortunately, the least likely motivation for change seems to be inspiration, which is often, ironically, the BEST reason for change! Out of the chute, inspiration is certainly compelling, but carrying that ‘high’ long term, or at least long enough to do something incredible with it is rare.

So when we aren’t forced or coerced into change, how can inspiration alone to take us fromcampfire where we are to where we want to be? The truth is, it can’t. Inspiration fizzles. Just like a fire which must be fed to exist, the inspiration you feel must be fueled and nurtured. There’s a world of difference between being inspired and being motivated.

Do you feel a purpose or call for something different? A healthy responsibility to it? Will your life be less meaningful if you don’t pursue the desire that’s tugging at you? Is God speaking to you? Take it seriously. Eating is serious business, right? You make sure you’ve got enough money to buy your food, shop to keep your home stocked and then take the time to prepare what you’re eating. Liken what’s inspiring you to something that is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY and treat it as such. Necessities get attention and accomplished. Now THAT’s motivation!

  • Write down your goals with pen and paper and share them with someone. Actually…share them with a lot of ‘someones’. The more people you tell your goals to, the more real they become and the more accountable you become TO them. You HAVE to start somewhere and speaking your intentions out loud is a great first step.
  • Don’t go this alone. Make an intentional effort to surround yourself with people that are like minded and similarly focused. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17) Feed off of people who offer a positive influence. Also, look ahead. Choose some people who have already blazed a path in the direction you wish to go. There’s no shame in tapping into someone else’s energy and information. And just think, if you get motivated and make things happen, YOU can pay it forward one day!
  • Forget the one stop shopping! Make a game plan to consistently feed your desire with information. Just ‘winging it’ DOES NOT WORK! Line up tools today, tomorrow and next week so you’ll have commitment AND consistency firmly in place. Have a plan and stick to it! Enlist the help of a life coach. Immerse yourself in your new direction.

Make THIS time different from the rest. FORGET THE FLASH IN THE PAN! Should you declutter for yourself or for God? Do you need to make difficult relationship changes? Do you desire a career change? Are you passing on your passion? Allowing life to run you? Accepting unhealthy behaviors? Wasting precious time and resources? Whatever the case, it’s time to make your goals and dreams happen and KEEP them happening!!!
