Romans 12:2
Encouragement to fulfill God's purpose through Practical Life Application and Navigation

A Winning One-Two Punch

Lindon & I recently came across a quote by noted author, speaker and business trainer, Jeffrey Gitomer. He said, “The difference between motivation and inspiration is that motivation must be constantly injected. Inspiration lasts a lifetime.” This really resonated with us!

This quote sparked some great conversation and somewhere along the way, we decided to look further into the textbook difference between the two. Dictionary.com provides the following definitions:

Motivation – “The general desire or willingness of someone to do something.”

Inspiration – “The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something.”

We could get super technical and pick this apart even further, but for our purpose, we think this basic comparison provides an ample springboard for discussion. It appears both can jumpstart our behavior, but Gitomer implies the difference lies in the longevity of the action after the prompt.

While motivation encourages more of an isolated physical movement, inspiration speaks to our soul and taps into our emotions, resulting in a long term mindset.

We contend that BOTH are vital and necessary.

Who doesn’t want the kind of inspiration that provides a lifetime of passion? The ache in your gut that rocks your world and in a split second you know life will never be the same, or at least it shouldn’t! We certainly do and were recently blessed with finally understanding true inspiration.

But motivation also has its place. It can be the catalyst which provides the steps necessary to follow your inspiration. It might be the kick needed to launch your action plan or the boost to accomplish a specific task or project. Pretty important too!

We searched verses that had to do with each and here’s an example of what we found:

Inspiration – Isaiah 40:31“but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Motivation – Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

Do you see the distinction? Why not put them both to work for you? It’s a winning one-two punch!

Share with us and example of EACH in your life. Motivate us! Inspire us! We can’t wait!
