Romans 12:2
Encouragement to fulfill God's purpose through Practical Life Application and Navigation

Become a Wave-Maker!

Just because you aren’t doing anything wrong, doesn’t mean you’re doing something right. Maybe you’re just doing NOTHING at all?

When you were little, did your parents call out to you as you ran off to play, “Don’t get into any trouble”? My mom sure did, over and over again. Much to her dismay, I often failed to honor her request. Consider, though, the basic message this statement sends. Fly under the radar, don’t do anything to cause a problem and just behave yourself. BORING! Maybe – but as a youngster, who wants to get punished and relegated to a life of solitary confinement? Certainly not I! So, just ‘staying out of trouble’ WAS a solid ambition. As I grew, however, this just wasn’t enough. Not by a long shot.

We are called to be impactful; to change our world – to make a difference! God equipped each of us with unique gifts and talents and he desires that we use them to shine his light. We aren’t to ‘waste’ our blessings and just quietly go about our business, unnoticed, doing nothing more than keeping to ourselves. Quite the contrary. It’s not that our goal should be to make waves, but you know the saying, “Well behaved women (or men!) rarely make history.” (Laurel Thatcher Ulrich) Sometimes waves are necessary.

Ephesians 5:15-17 says, “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

There are several messages packed into these three short verses. Paul was trying to convey a sense of urgency and awareness. Evil most assuredly lurks everywhere, but we can combat evil by being prudent and wise; diligently seeking ALL opportunities to do good and bring glory to his kingdom. We are called to make the most of every situation and discern God’s will for our life. Simply flying under the radar doesn’t cut it here.

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.”

(Romans 12:11) Zeal is defined as passion, fanaticism, enthusiasm and eagerness. Paul leaves no room for indifference or apathy. He wants you ALL in, actively and energetically serving.

Is God tugging at you? Stop coloring in the lines and step out. Shake things up a bit. I’m not suggesting the goal should be to ‘make trouble’, but sometimes in the course of chasing a dream or answering God’s call, waves will be made and there may be times of discomfort and uncertainty. This is perfectly okay and par for the course. There is rarely gain without risk.

When my boys played baseball, they knew I would never be upset with them for striking out but I’d much prefer they went down swinging. Don’t just stand there and watch. Life is NOT a spectator sport. Hear God’s word and go after it. Commit to making a positive difference!

Have you experienced a situation where making a difference was uncomfortable but paid off? Are you a Wave-Maker? I’d love to hear your story. Please share by commenting below. God Bless!
