No, not curb appeal but DIRT APPEAL!
My husband and I own a piece of land about an hour and a half outside the city. It’s our 4 acres of paradise; in fact, we call it ‘Almost Heaven Ranch’. Okay, so there’s no house on it yet but it’s our ‘ranch in progress’!
Every so often we take some friends to go see our dirt, as we did this past weekend. There isn’t any shelter on it and it lacks ‘proper facilities’. No running water either. The comfy patio set hasn’t made it to the ranch yet, simply because there’s no fancy deck to put it on. And don’t expect any food, unless you bring it with you of course.
Just dirt…and trees.
Why is this appealing?
For starters, on the way TO our spectacular little piece of the world, there is a DELISH breakfast joint that we can’t help but support. Man is it the stuff our food dreams are made of. The friends we bring are never disappointed.
But aside from feeding our faces, the joy is in the absolute simplicity of the beauty and peace. The gorgeous blue skies and sound of the wind rustling gently through the pines. The gorgeous valley below and incredible mountain views. Tranquil…serene…perfect.
Sunday was no exception.
We set up our chairs – on the dirt – and talk. We share, laugh and dream. We connect, bond and grow. We relax and take in all the tranquility of this unhurried environment. We grab a few drinks from the cooler and friends share the cookies and crackers they brought; a meal fit for royalty. We talk about the future and together, we make plans for our part in God’s Kingdom. We pray.
As the day draws to a close and the sun starts its descent behind the mountaintop, the air chills and jackets come out. When asked who is ready to head back home, someone quietly pipes up, “No one.” There is quiet.
Where is your dirt appeal? Your place of comfort and serenity…where the pace is slow and inner joy abounds. Your quiet escape from the noise of every day life. Your respite and recharge.
Whether for an hour, a day or a week, make it a priority. If you don’t do it for yourself, no one will do it for you.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul…” Psalm 23:1-3
Refresh your soul. Find YOUR dirt appeal – frequently. Soak it up. Recharge. Not only will you be caring for yourself the way God desires, but you’ll be in better shape to bless those around you…and perhaps you’ll even share your dirt with them!
