Sometimes what you don’t say can mean just as much, if not more, than what you do. With that in mind, are you leaving anything to chance?
Think about the choices you have and decisions you make on a daily basis which reflect who you are and what you believe. Life offers a constant barrage of critical junctures and defining moments, all of which combine to create the person you are.
Are you leaving ANYTHING for others to decide on your behalf?
As the saying goes, “If you don’t define yourself, someone else will.”
It takes courage to be yourself. Sounds silly…but think about how often people are ridiculed for something they’ve said or condemned for their beliefs. Being true to yourself is no small task. Sometimes the path of least resistance is taken, but this isn’t always the wisest option. And unfortunately, not everyone has your best interests at heart.
Ask yourself a few key questions:
- Are you able to speak up, even when awkward, if you know you must?
- Are you able to say no when it’s the unpopular choice?
- Are you willing to step up when someone legitimately needs your help, even if it’s an inconvenience or burden?
- Are you passionate enough to take a leap of faith when God is calling to you, even if you are unsure or fearful?
If you answered ‘no’ to any of the above, you might be leaving something critical to chance.
There’s a line from the Switchfoot song “This is Your Life” which asks, ““This is your life, are you who you want to be?” (fantastic song if you’ve never heard it…check it out on YouTube!) Note that it asks, “Are you WHO you want to be?” It doesn’t ask, “Are you ‘where’ you want to be,” or, “are you who you ‘thought’ you’d be?” It certainly doesn’t ask, “Are you who someone ‘else’ wants you to be?”
Nope. Definitely not.
It asks, “Are you WHO you WANT to be?” Personal. Intimate. Real Time. Right Now. Significant and poignant question.
What’s your answer? If it’s no, you’ve got some work to do but NOTHING is impossible or out of reach with desire and determination, coupled with God’s grace and guidance.
Matthew 7:7 tells us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” This doesn’t mean that God will blindly just hand over whatever you might ask for. It does, however, reassure that God is there for you, and when you bring your desires to his feet, he will hear and respond. You are never, ever alone.
Everyone, to some degree, is a work in progress. You need not be discouraged for where you’ve failed or for what hasn’t yet been accomplished. Instead, be grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunity to grow and continually move closer to WHO you want to be.
Don’t stop short or give up, and don’t leave something this important to chance or for someone else to decide for you. Turn in your ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card, collect $200 for passing ‘Go’ and believe in yourself as God does for “…with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
